For those that don't know, the R4DS is a slot 1 NDS Cartridge sized flash memory adapter card for the Nintendo DSi. It was originally brought out as the R4 DS Revolution and allowed NDS owners to extend on, and literally power up the features and functions of their Nintends DS consoles.

While the R4 DS Card lets you use mircroSD Cards on your DS or DSi, you must first prepare the R4 DS Card to be recognised by the NDS. If you don't take the accompanying steps to update the R4DS Card with the firmware you will not be able to use it in your NDS system, as it will not be recognized as a standard card. In fact, when you power your NDS without first setting up the R4 DS Card your DS can not even recognise that a game card has been inserted and the r4ds card will not turn up on the menu or boot screen of the DS console.

In the following list I will present you the step by step instructions on how to install the R4DS Card and use it. All you have to do is abide by the steps in the order listed below and you will be up and running in no time.

The 1st thing you'll have to do, is format the microSD card. A lot of microSD cards arrive formatted out of the package, but more often than not, they're not formatted in FAT32 mode, which is what you want it to be formatted as. This is because many microSD cards get formatted as FAT16 or NTFS, the makers strongly advocate all cards to be formatted using FAT32 for bullet proof compatibily and fault free performance. You can format the card in just a few moments using either variants of Windows. Just right click using your mouse on the proper drive letter (The one that windows shows when you stick in your microSD Card) and click on the FORMAT option in the menu. You can choose quick format and you can have it formatted in just a few seconds. Once More, make certain you have selected FAT32 from the drop down list.

The next step if of course to install the firmware that comes for your R4DS card. Each R4 DS Card comes with downloadable firmware which must first be copied on to, or installed to the microSD card. With no firmware loaded, the R4DS will not work on your NDS at all. Now, don't let me scare you, the installation is super quick and very easy. Nothing else has to be done. Again, it is not hard at all. Once the firmware is installed, the R4DS will be recognized by the NDS and will work just as a regular game card would.

Before you skip forward and set the microSD Card into the R4DS, first download and find many homebrew games or applications you'd like to test. Or, of course, set up your film or music files on the microSD card. Whatever type of file you'd like to use or load, merely drag and drop it on to the microSD card and it will surface in the R4DS Card menu when you turn on your Nintendo DS or DSi.

There are hundreds and hundreds, of homebrew / amateur games and applications to select from, and your only restriction on what you can store on your card is the gigabytes of space of the microSD card you've purchased.

You can now take the microSD Card and put it into the R4DS card all that's left is to plug in the R4DS or R4i SDHC DS into your Nintendo DS or DSi. When you your NDS you should see the word "Loading" on the screen for approximately 1 second. It will then quick bring up the R4DS menu which will show for you all of the files you've copied to the microSD card. Be they game files, movies, music or even eBooks. Simply select the file you wish to load and it will load up within one or two seconds and you're on your way to a whole new way of using your Nintendo DS or DSi console.
